Mr Julian Smith
Mr Julian Smith is a Consultant Urological Surgeon working at the University Hospital Southampton, as well as the Bournemouth Nuffield and Spire Southampton Hospital. He specialises in Urological Oncology and in particular major pelvic surgery for bladder cancer. In conjunction with his colorectal colleagues Mr Smith has expertise in major pelvic exenterative surgery for advanced pelvic cancer. His other interests include prostate cancer screening, diagnostics and treatments, urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary incontinence and general urology.
Mr Smith graduated from Imperial College London in 2002 before commencing his basic surgical training at the Royal Surrey Hospital. He subsequently completed 2 years in a clinical research post at Guy’s and St. Thomas Hospital in London. The focus of his research was prostate cancer, prostate cancer diagnostics and robotic surgery. Those studies led him to write and publish a thesis on transperineal template prostate biopsies. He then went on to his higher training in Wessex.
Having a patient-centred approach, Mr Julian has been working on improving the experience for his patients. He established the local Enhanced Recovery Programme for patients after major pelvic urological surgery and he has written National Guidelines for British Association of Urological Surgeons on this regard. His work has been recognised and awarded. His Enhanced Recovery Programme was awarded in 2015 with a Clinical Excellence Achievement. The same year, Mr Smith was nominated for the BAUS John Anderson Award.
